SEA, MY LOVE .. a love letter to the sea of Milla Piirainen

On October 8th, the exhibition SEA, MY LOVE opened at Luckan (Yrjönkatu 27) in Helsinki—a love letter to the sea from Finnish painter Milla Piirainen, inviting us to pause by the seaside and reflect on our relationship with the sea.
This talented painter has found inspiration in the sea—a way to express her feelings not through words, but through her paintings, which explore the sea as an ever-changing environment where color, movement, and atmosphere reflect the artist’s various emotional states and moments in her life.
And so, throughout Milla’s artistic journey, the need arose to give something back to the sea—a great source of inspiration for her. She did this by curating this exhibition, which, at its opening, was graced by the presence of wonderful guests who truly made it a special and unforgettable evening.
The artist wished to thank the entire Baltic Sea Action Group team—in particular Anna Klemelä and Anton Lehtinen—for their wonderful speeches and for attending the exhibition opening.
Thanks also go to Mette-Marissa Leppänen for the poems, and to Terho Oksman for his brilliant performance.
A heartfelt thank you also goes to Luckan for the fantastic exhibition space, and especially to Larrie Griffis for taking such great care of the guests.
Milla will donate 40% of the proceeds from the works sold during her exhibition to the Baltic Sea Action Group, in support of their work to protect the Baltic Sea.
A love letter…
I think of you when morning comes around again.
How do you start your day over there, so far away from me?
And you have no idea how much I miss you—how much I miss having you here with me every single morning.
Even if you don’t know it, even if you’ve forgotten so many things—I cannot forget.

Sea, My Love is on view until October 30.

SEA, MY LOVE è in mostra fino al 30 ottobre.

She was determined to turn creativity into her profession. She was accepted to study Fashion and later Visual Culture in the Art department of the Aalto University, she also studied animation in order to understand how still images can create the illusion of time and movement
The joyous energy and colours are the first things people notice about Elli’s paintings, she works with both traditional and digital paints
Nature and its creatures – animals and humans alike – are her biggest inspiration an by describing herself as an “animated painter” she doesn’t only refer to the augmented paintings, that come alive as 2D animations through augmented reality but also to the adjective “animated”, which means being full of life and excitement
Her biggest influencers are multitalented storyteller Tove Jansson and contemporary painters Milt Kobayashi and Karoliina Hellberg
