Galway – 68° International Oyster & Seafood Festival

Galway la cittadina irlandese amata da scrittori ed artisti, centro della cultura gaelica e della musica tradizionale ospiterà dal 23 al 25 settembre 2022 la 68° edizione del Festival Internazionale delle ostriche e dei frutti di mare.
Il più vecchio Festival al mondo dedicato alle ostriche fu lanciato nel settembre del 1954 da Brian Collins, manager del Great Southern Hotel (oggi chiamato Hotel Meyrick).
Dal 1968 all’interno della manifestazione ha fatto la sua comparsa il Campionato mondiale di apertura delle ostriche (a cui partecipano concorrenti provenienti da più di 20 Nazioni ) che ogni anno decreta come vincitore chi riuscirà ad aprire nel minor tempo possibile 30 ostriche; il record mondiale (a tutt’oggi imbattuto) appartiene a Willie Morans che nel 1977 aprì le 30 ostriche in 1 minuto e 31 secondi, mentre il vincitore della prima edizione fu John Cummins con il tempo di 3 minuti e 34 secondi.
The Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival che porta tanta notorietà a Galway si tiene ogni anno nel mese di settembre quando si possono gustare le prime ostriche della nuova stagione.
La stagione delle ostriche inizia infatti a settembre, poiché la regola vuole che le ostriche migliori siano consumate nei mesi che hanno una ” r “ nel nome, e quindi da settembre ad aprile.
E’ il Festival ad hoc per chi ama le ostriche (quelle irlandesi sono particolarmente deliziose) per cui grandi scorpacciate di ostriche alla tartara e fiumi di birra Guinness per chi deciderà di trascorrere l’ultimo week end di settembre a Galway.
Il programma del Festival prevede anche un interessantissimo Seafood Trail che consentirà agli amanti dei frutti di mare di assaggiarli nei principali ristoranti che hanno aderito all’iniziativa ( consultare la relativa cartina).
Il successo del Festival è sancito dall’aver saputo richiamare durante le varie edizioni oltre mezzo milione di visitatori che hanno consumato più di 3 milioni di ostriche innaffiate con fiumi di birra Guinness e Champagne.

The Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival which brings such notoriety to Galway is held every year in September when the first oysters of the new season can be tasted.
In fact, the oyster season begins in September, as the rule dictates that the best oysters are consumed in the months that have an “r” in their name, and therefore from September to April.
It is the festival ad hoc for those who love oysters (the Irish ones are particularly delicious) for which a large feast of tartare oysters and rivers of Guinness beer for those who decide to spend the last weekend of September in Galway.
The Festival program also includes a very interesting Seafood Trail that will allow seafood lovers to taste them in the main restaurants that have joined the initiative (see the relevant map).
The success of the Festival is sanctioned by having been able to attract over half a million visitors during the various editions who have consumed more than 3 million oysters washed down with rivers of Guinness beer and Champagne

Galway, Cathair na Gaillimhe in gaelico, è una cittadina cosmopolita, amata da scrittori ed artisti e centro della cultura gaelica e della musica tradizionale che si trova nella omonima Contea.
Nel 2020 sarà capitale europea della cultura.
Una delle sue più famose attrazioni è il Salmon Weir Bridge, un ponte sul fiume Corrib dove da metà aprile ai primi di luglio si possono vedere giornalmente i salmoni che risalgono il fiume per andare a deporre le uova.
La sua maggiore notorietà le viene però per essere la città del Festival delle ostriche, che puntualmente si tiene ogni anno nel mese di settembre quando si possono gustare le prime ostriche della nuova stagione.
Lasciando il centro cittadino si può fare una bellissima passeggiata panoramica verso il sobborgo di Salthill, “Bóthar na Tra”, in gaelico che significa letteralmente “strada lungo il mare”.
Se la vostra vacanza non sarà breve vi consiglio di andare a visitare le Isole Aran, tre piccole isole rocciose (INIS MÓR la più grande, INIS MEÁIN e INIS OÍRR) situate all’imbocco della baia di Galway.
Si possono raggiungere via mare con i traghetti che partono tutti i giorni da Rossaveal, poco fuori Galway, o con i voli panoramici della compagnia Aer Arann, che utilizza piccoli aerei da 8 posti che sorvolano le isole in un viaggio panoramica che dura circa 35 minuti.
Ovviamente se volete viverle appieno è meglio usare il traghetto che vi permette di stare qualche ora sull’isola principale e perdervi tra la sua disarmante bellezza e fare un po’ di shopping andando a caccia dei famosi maglioni in lana di Arann.

One of its most famous attractions is the Salmon Weir Bridge, a bridge on the river Corrib where from mid-April to early July you can see daily the salmon that go up the river to go to lay the eggs.
Its greatest notoriety comes however to be the city of the International Oyster Festival which is held every year in September when you can taste the first oysters of the new season.
Leaving the city center you can take a beautiful scenic walk towards the suburb of Salthill, “Bóthar na Tra”, in Gaelic which literally means “road along the sea”.
If your holiday will not be short I recommend going to visit the Aran Islands, three small rocky islands (INIS MÓR the largest, INIS MEÁIN and INIS OÍRR) located at the entrance of the bay of Galway.
You can reach by sea with ferries who leave everyday from Rossaveal, just outside Galway, or with the scenic flights of the Aer Arann company, which uses small 8-seat aircraft that fly over the islands on a scenic journey that takes about 35 minutes.
If you want to know them better use the ferry that allows you to stay a few hours on the main island and get lost in his disarming beauty and do some shopping looking for the famous Arann wool sweaters.

Dublino – CHRISTMAS ON THE SQUARE a Merrion Square

Merrion Square il cuore della Dublino georgiana, uno dei tesori culturali irlandesi, ospiterà sabato 28 novembre dalle 10 alle 17 per un giorno “Christmas on the Square“ dove si troverà il meglio dei prodotti del design irlandese e della gastronomia artigianale.
Il punto nevralgico del Natale in piazza sarà al No.45 Irish Architectural Archive dove saranno presentati originali prodotti dell’artigiano tipico irlandese e una vasta selezione di cibi rigorosamente “Irish”.
Sin dal 1762, Merrion Square ha rappresentato la raffinatezza irlandese, l’eccellenza architettonica, il vivere elegantemente e l’illuminata pianificazione urbanistica.
Una piazza che è un viaggio stesso attraverso l’arte, la letteratura, la musica, la storia e l’architettura irlandesi e che per questo non smette di attirare folle di visitatori lungo l’intero arco dell’anno.
I suoi architetti la concepirono per essere la più grandiosa delle molte piazze georgiane di Dublino. Circondata su tre lati da splendidi edifici settecenteschi, il quarto lato è chiuso dai giardini di Leinster House, la National Gallery of Ireland e il National History Museum, mentre al centro della piazza si stende un altro grande giardino verdeggiante.
Molte tra le più importanti istituzioni politiche, scientifiche e culturali dell’Isola di Smeraldo hanno sede qui da tempo.
Il Parlamento Irlandese si riunisce a Leinster House, mentre la piazza è anche sede dell’Irish Georgian Society, il Traditional Music Archive, l’Irish Architectural Archive e la Royal Society of Antiquaries.
La piazza ha una storia affascinante, in gran parte grazie ai molti residenti eccellenti che qui vissero anno dopo anno e la cui presenza è attestata da decine di targhe che segnalano i vari artisti, scrittori e pensatori che qui trascorsero parte della loro vita.
Oscar Wilde trascorse la sua infanzia al No.1, mentre Bram Stoker, autore di Dracula, fu assiduo frequentatore del salotto di Lady Wilde.
WB Yeats dimorò al No.82 e il leader politico Daniel O’Connell al No.58, mentre la famosa stilista di moda Louise Kennedy ha il suo atelier sulla prestigiosa piazza dove al No.56 offre una rara opportunità per uno shopping di grande qualità, non solo di moda ma anche di raffinata oggettistica.
Ogni domenica, collezionisti e creativi si danno appuntamento nella piazza per la Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery, una tradizione dublinese assai popolare che offre in vendita un’ampia varietà di opere originali, esposte sulla cancellata del parco.
Ma vediamo cosa si può trovare a Christmas on the Square:
– al No.45 Irish Architectural Archive saranno in mostra prodotti dell’artigianato tipico irlandese ed esporranno i loro prodotti: A Box For My Treasure, Bold Bunny, BrickBear Clothing, Clarke’s of Dublin, EkoTree, Elks, Fawn, Jennifer Slattery Textiles, KaroArt, Liadain Aiken Knitwear, Little Hill Designs, Magic Forest Toys, Making Things Look Better, Roads, The Saturday Workshop, Snow and Superfolk.
– sempre al n°45 troverete una selezione di prodotti gastronomici tipicamente irlandesi presentati da questi espositori: Ballyhoura Mountain Mushrooms, Burren Smokehouse, Clonakilty Chocolate, Corleggy Cheese, The Dublin Honey Project, Mungo Murphy’s Seaweed Company, The Merrion Pantry, Wildflour Bakery, and Wild Irish Foragers & Preserves.
Ma è al Number Twenty Nine che sarà festa grande per i bimbi visto che dalle 11 alle 16 ci sarà Santa on the Square, con Babbo Natale che si farà trovare per la delizia di tutti i bambini circondato dall’atmosfera tipicamente georgiana al Number Twenty Nine del Georgian House Museum in Fitzwilliam Street Lower, prima di partire per il Polo Nord dove si preparerà per il suo viaggio nella notte di Natale.
